Illustrating Paediatric Orthopaedics. 2005. Penerbit UKM: Bangi. ISBN 967-942-698-x. 140 pp. RM50.00. Sharaf Ibrahim

Children are not small adults and diseases in children are often very different from adults. These differences must be recognised and treatment planned accordingly. Orthopaedics complication includes deformities, injuries and diseases of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles (musculoskeletal diseases). Most of the early advances in orthopaedics were made by orthopaedics surgeon to correct deformities such as clubfoot and provide supports for broken or diseased bones. The development of bone grafting, the advent of surgical methods for treating fractures and other advances led to the recognition of orthopaedics as a distinct medical speciality. Clubfoot, the after effects of poliomyelitis, fractures, spinal deformities and other arthritic disorders are among the conditions that require the attention of an orthopaedist. Treatment provided by an orthopeadist may include manipulation, the fitting of braces of other appliances, exercising and surgery. When treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system in children, the effect of growth can either improve or worsen a particular deformity. Illustrating Paediatric Orthopaedics highlights some of the common musculoskeletal diseases and the treatment of children in Malaysia.
